The USS Midway Museum is difficult to miss on San Diego’s waterfront. The enormous former aircraft carrier is now a museum where visitors can explore aviation, naval history and what daily life aboard a ship of this scale was like.
The ship is the main exhibit
Aircraft are fascinating, but simply moving through the carrier is an experience. Narrow passages, machinery and working spaces make the scale much easier to understand than photographs ever could.
Head to the flight deck
The flight deck combines aircraft displays with excellent views across San Diego Bay. Allow time up there rather than rushing through.
Expect stairs and walking
A historic ship is not designed like a modern museum. Some areas involve steep ladders, steps or confined spaces, while accessibility varies by section. Check current museum guidance if mobility is a concern.
Allow several hours
People interested in aviation or military history can easily spend half a day aboard.
Even if those subjects are not normally your priority, the Midway’s physical scale makes it memorable.
Combine it with a waterfront walk afterward. After several hours inside a carrier, sitting beside San Diego Bay with open sky around you feels particularly good.
