Sunset Cliffs has a name that sets expectations rather high, but the coastline usually does a good job of meeting them. Rugged cliffs face directly toward the Pacific, making this one of San Diego’s classic places for an evening walk.
Come before sunset
Do not arrive two minutes before the sun disappears. Give yourself time to walk, find a viewpoint and watch the light change across the water.
Respect the cliffs
Beautiful does not mean harmless. Stay back from unstable edges, follow barriers and warnings, and avoid scrambling onto dangerous formations for photographs.
Daytime is worthwhile too
The area is not only for sunsets. Coastal walks and ocean views make it attractive throughout the day, and visiting earlier can mean a more relaxed experience.
Combine it with Ocean Beach
Sunset Cliffs fits naturally into a day around Ocean Beach and Point Loma. Spend the afternoon exploring, then finish beside the Pacific.
Parking and crowds can become challenging at popular times, so allow some flexibility.
This is not an attraction that needs much explanation. Bring something warm if the evening turns cool, put the phone away for a few minutes and watch the horizon do the work.
